A Cornish Shout is a singing session usually held in a pub. A shout differs from a performance by a choir or a even a singaround – there are often various leaders who lead their favourite song – they ‘pitch’n up’ , the songs may have choruses but generally everyone joins in the whole song; which always seem to have harmonies many developed over time; standing up usually with a pint of beer; generally a standard repetoire with particular favourites in different areas; anyone can join in. It doesn’t need an ‘audience’, it is not a performance but rather an experience. The type of songs used in Cornish shouts vary from traditional Cornish folk songs through to songs taken from the Methodist “Sankey night” tradition.
