Rum and Shrub is a “Short Drink” made from dark rum and a cordial called shrub. In times past it was common to find spirits which had been tainted during smuggling by salt water. To mask this. sweet cordials and fruit country wines were mixed with spirits such as brandy and rum. A drink known as shrub was also used as a medicine by sailors to treat and prevent scurvy. Shrub can be made easily by adding fruit juice (of any kind) and large quantities of sugar to a base spirit. The spirit and sugar preserves the juice making it a handy source of vitamin c.
The most popular form of shrub is produced by Phillips of Bristol who also produce Lovage a simialr product that can be mixed with Brandy.
