Mock Mayors and Sham Leaders

There is a tradition among many Cornish communities to elect a “Mock” or sham Mayor during festivals and feast days. The two most famous of these was the Mayor of the Quay in Penzance, who was and is elected during the Golowan festival to oversee the firey carnival, and the Mayor of Mylor a Mock Mayor tradition from Penryn. A mock mayor was also elected at Helston during the furry day proceedings, when Helston’s feast day was reorganized by the Victorian establishment into its present form this seems to have been removed as does the large colourful processions that took place between dances. In 2016 the people of Penryn in association with the Cornish Culture Association, the charity that runs this website, plan to revive the Penryn tradition.
