Pilot gig racing is an increasingly popular sport that has its origins in Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly. Pilot gigs were rowing boats that met incoming merchant ships entering into harbours to “pilot” them safely to their mooring . Legend has it that gigs used to be paid according to a “first come first serve” basis and the custom of racing these vessels cam from this practice. Today pilot gigs are popular throughout Cornwall and are becoming increasingly common throughout Europe!
