Bal Maidens and Fish Wives Costume

Working Cornish woman in the 19th and 18th centuries wore a distinct costume. This consisted of a long dress, long white apron and a bonnet known as a gook,. Some gooks were made from hard board and were intended as a basic protector for the head especially for those woman who worked in the mining industry, the “Bal Maidens”.

Bal_maidens“Fish Wives”, woman who worked in the fishing industry or sold fish, would often wear similar costumes to that of the Bal Maidens.
